March 14, 2016
Attending in order of appearance: Phil, John, Jon, Kaj, Marc, George and Peggy. Guest: Harry Bell.
Vice President Phil Kitchel called the meeting to order at 7:30am.
First item on the agenda was to replace Andrew as the PABA representative to the Chamber since his term is up. President John asked Kaj if he would be Andrew’s replacement. Kaj said yes.
Next, President John Brewer said he would send a letter of appreciation to Senator Jim Hargrove for his three decades of service.
Third, Edna moved and Peggy seconded that the name of possible new members be accepted. President John Brewer will award them with their membership certificate next week.
In his Treasurer’s Report, Jon said there are now 58 paid members. Two bills, the Youth Government and the City 101 display will be paid out of reserves. John B moved and Edna seconded approval of the budget and a big thank you to Jon for all his good work on keeping the budget up to date. Motion carried.
Next, the subject of School Boards, bonds and levies came up. Several comments and questions were: What are successful school districts doing to pass their bond? What can PABA do? How do you get the public to understand revenues and taxes to recognize the disconnect between voters and the schools. Why is there a lack of Maintenance and Operations Funds, of good planning and of lack of attention by the school board? Why was the McCreary issue funded by WEA?
There were more questions, comments and concerns, BUT the agreement of the board was that PABA should and can be the leader in getting the correct and current information to the public about school issues. It was suggested that PABA members attend planning and school board meetings. President John will invite Steve Methner to speak at a PABA meeting.
Harry Bell said the Governmental Affairs Committee met and discussed such topics as septic tax, carbon tax, growth management and school construction. Some of these issues might be brought up at Tuesday’s meeting.
Marc said he attended the PADA meeting where they discussed the importance of the Main Street Project and what they can do to be ready for the next bids. He said the hiring of an Executive Director is important.
George said the ferry terminal in Victoria is not finished so people should be aware that the handicapped have to get off with the cars.
Meeting adjourned at 8:31am.
