Meeting Minutes
May 8, 2018
Meeting was called to order by Carol Johnson, VP, at 7:30am. Kaj Ahlburg led the flag salute.
Minutes:
Andrew May moved, Jack G. seconded approval of May 1 minutes. Motion carried.
Announcements:
Matthew thanked everyone for the card and well wishes.
Bob for CresComm said broadband now runs to east Lake Sutherland. Maple Grove should be complete by the end of the month.
Andrew reminded everyone that Mother’s Day is a great day to give flowers.
Peggy gave the quote of the day.
Program: Mary Budke, Boys & Girls Club
Andrew May introduced Mary.
The club has an annual budget of $1.5M for both clubhouses that they raise. At their capital campaign they need to raise $6M more to retain operation.
Steve Deuterman, Norma Turner, Jim Hallett, Steve Zenovic, John and Ashley were all introduced.
Mary Gave examples of the power of B&G club in lives of youth.
The club is full with 150 kids per day and 50 families on a waiting list. Their kids have a 100% graduation rate. The club is the oldest youth serving organization in the US.
Sports, arts, computers, games, recreation, nutrition, teen center (15 daily) encompass their programs.
The new 16,000sf clubhouse will be able to serve twice as many kids, will be a community asset as a disaster location for emergency management plan, house a gym, commercial kitchen and provide summer meals for all kids at a $6.9M total cost. They have $3.3M raised so far.
They source food locally, Costco, etc., and on Fridays, food banks do bag lunches.
Steve Zenovic explained the timeline for completion at $300sf for building cost. Mary explained that outside rental use will not impact their activities. They won’t start building until they have 90% of funds raised. The Olympic Peninsula club is one organization with 2 clubhouses.
Vans, buses transport kids to outside activities. Junior rangers, etc.
Norma Turner asked for Community Champions meaning that you endorse B&G Club and receive updates They are looking for groups to sponsor delivery lunches for a week.
Jim Hallett talked about the important asset that the Club is for Port Angeles and Sequim.
Carol said small communities are better able to rally together, i.e., when Matthew went down other jumped in to help her.
Jack G. said Jim Buck has been featured on BBC.
